vacation beach Well, not entirely. This is the time of year when I take a much needed break from blog posts, FacebookWattpad, researching for future stories and projects and so on and so forth. This year, while I am cutting back a little, I have part two of Trials of The Hunt to jump-start. There is no full-on vacation, except for a couple weekends here and there, and a week for GenCon in August.

To keep up appearances with the sidhe, Sloane and father had done their best to make our meetings strictly about the business of returning my mother’s remains to her family in the north. I knew they intended me to remain there. They were unsure how all of this loss would affect me. No one could know how my trials would be affected, or even if this was part of my trials. It was Turi who said, “…it can’t all be battles and sword fights.” He had to be right. Father still led the Wild Hunt, and I hadn’t answered the call since that fateful night. The brethren understood my hesitation after what happened the last time I rode with them. Even Orion didn’t bother me about joining them. I needed time. This trip, these trials, were the perfect excuse to take my time from the Horde.

“She may come to you now, you know.”

Gannon sighed as he perused the shelves. “I have done all I can for her, for House Emberiz. We all have. It’s too late to seek anything from me. She is betrothed to my brother, he is to be king. Anything she needs, she can get from him. To come to me now would be highly inappropriate. If you can’t make her understand anything else, make her understand that.”

Sloane entered the stark white room just to the west of the administration wing. The brothers had decided long ago. If Kirwin had to get his sons to agree to these betrothals, and Naois had to work with the noble houses to get all in agreement, then Sloane would be the one to notify the parties if something went awry. There was no ‘short stick’ as it were. These were all very difficult positions for the brothers to be in. They each supported one another in their own way as they had to bring these plans and plots to fruition. But this time Sloane was on his own.

It was past noon when Gannon first opened his eyes. They burned, his throat burned and his head ached like he’d been hit by a mace. Maybe he’d hit the floor and just didn’t recall. He rubbed the sore spot on his forehead and decided the mead made him pass out. Strong stuff. He took his time sitting upright, his stomach churned and the room spun right before his eyes. He closed them shut, tight. He sat up hurriedly and held his breath to keep from vomiting.
